Discount real estate agents will certainly be able to list your home for you. However, if that is all they are going to do then you might as well use a one-time flat fee listing service. This will save you even more money. However, if you are looking for more than that, if you are looking for someone who will also be working for you the entire time to help qualified people to see your home and to get it sold promptly then you will need to pay some commission. If you can find a real estate agent that is willing to cut half of their share of the commission you are in good shape. A typical commission for the selling agent is 3%. Therefore if you can get the agent to cut their commission by 1.5% you can save yourself thousands of dollars.
If you're buying a home the situation is a little different. Since the buyer is not the one paying the commission you may think that a discount agent wouldn't be necessary. However, buyers can also find discount real estate agents that give part of their commission back to the buyer at closing. If you are buying a home and the real estate agent is willing to give you 1% back at closing you can end up getting a check for several thousand dollars at closing. Not a bad a house warming gift.
Either way, whether you are buying or selling real estate, discount real estate agents can save you big in the long run.
